Week one starts ninety minutes from home on the new M81: teak decks over green water, waterfall mornings, a massage every single afternoon because it costs less than lunch. Week two crosses to Pak Nam Pran via the cave temples of Phetchaburi: seven kilometres of sand with nobody on it, squid-boat lights at dinner, and Thailand's most magical cave pavilion thirty minutes south. Maximum contrast, zero backtracking through Bangkok, and the whole loop is easy, well-signed driving.
If the dates or the season pull you a different way, the alternatives sit in a compact appendix after the recommended journey. But this pair is the one: short, stress-free opening leg, river to beach, no Bangkok in between, three hours home at the end.
Ninety minutes on the M81 from the Nonthaburi driveway. No airport, no Bangkok traffic. Check into a riverside deck at U Inchantree or The Xcape on the Kwai Noi. Walk the Bridge as the lights come on. Dinner at Keeree Tara facing the illuminated span. The first stop should feel like exhaling, and it does.
Erawan at 08:00 on a weekday: seven tiers of impossibly blue water, the upper tiers a proper little hike with a swim as the prize. Leave Kanchanaburi after breakfast. The cross-country drive to Pranburi runs three and a half to four hours through Phetchaburi, and the stops are worthwhile, not filler. Khao Luang cave temple inside a stalactite grotto with a reclining Buddha. The hilltop palace of Khao Wang, reachable by cable car. Time the Maeklong Railway Market for the train that runs through the stalls. Arrive at Pak Nam Pran by evening, squid-boat lights on the horizon.
Seven kilometres of near-empty sand south of a working fishing village, designer boutique resorts hiding behind the casuarinas. No bar street, no jet-ski touts. After nine the town is asleep, which is the point. Pool for the dead hours, a 250-baht beach massage at five. Dinner at Tonto: fried sea bass with mango salad, prawns baked in salt.
Thirty minutes south into Khao Sam Roi Yot. Boat around the headland, then a thirty-minute hill hike to Phraya Nakhon Cave: a royal pavilion built in 1890 inside a collapsed sinkhole, lit by a single sunbeam best at 10:00 to 12:00. Longtail up Khlong Khao Daeng past monitor lizards and kingfishers. The Bueng Bua boardwalk straight across a lotus marsh with three hundred limestone peaks behind.
Pranburi Forest Park mangrove walk at the river mouth, a kilometre of raised boardwalk through a mangrove cathedral. Swim under the skull-pierced headland at Khao Kalok. Buy sun-dried squid at the village and have the resort grill it. OX Seafood, the twenty-year beachfront institution: steamed blue crab, crab fried rice. Jim Daeng, no Western menu, tamarind prawns.
Sunset walks on the empty beach. Pool mornings, reading hours. A last longtail ride or a final hike up Wat Khao Daeng. Then three hours home on the Hwy 4, well-signed driving, no Bangkok in the middle. The loop closes clean: river to beach, jungle to sand, two bases, one easy circuit from the Nonthaburi driveway.
The river week: best bang for buck within two hours of home
The town strip has a mild backpacker buzz, but that is not where you are going. Fifteen to forty minutes upriver the Kwai Noi turns properly quiet: teak decks over green water, mist on the karst ridges at dawn, longtail boats instead of traffic. Evenings are candlelit riverside dinners, not nightlife. Days alternate between waterfall swims, sobering history and doing absolutely nothing on a deck. It is one of the best-value resort regions in Thailand, and since the M81 opened it is barely further from your door than the airport.

Best as: Khao Yai midweek, then the Chanthaburi coast, 4.5h south avoiding Bangkok. Mountains to quiet sea, never touching inner Bangkok.

Skip if: you need turquoise swimming water or any nightlife, and respect the drive: this only makes sense paired with Rayong so the way home breaks in half.

It was weighed as a seventh base and folded honestly: the core sights are a compact day-and-a-half circuit, there is no beach, and by day three you would be repeating yourselves. A week is genuinely too long. But it is one hour from your door, so keep it for what it is: the single best overnight stop in the country. One floodlit evening at a riverside pool facing Wat Phutthaisawan (iuDia ~2,500–3,500 THB, or Sala Ayutthaya ~4,500–5,500), giant river prawns at Baan Watcharachai, boat noodles at Lung Lek, and Wat Mahathat at 08:00 before the coaches. Then drive on. It slots naturally onto the front of a Khao Yai trip, with the Bang Pa-In palace and the monk-cranked cable car of Wat Niwet as the classic detour pair.
